Do you have a love or hate relationship with avocado? This unique fruit has often divided many foodies. Some people, like me, absolutely love it while others can’t even bring themselves to eat it. This reaction usually stems from the distinct yet subtle flavor and smooth texture of this fruit. I admit eating raw avocado with no added flavor can sometimes be too bland and weird tasting for some. Good news is that there are so many ways you can make avocado taste awesome. Today I want to share with you my absolute favorite way to eat avocado. My hope is that once you try this recipe you won’t be disappointed. I believe this yummy guacamole is going to make you love avocado.
This Yummy Guacamole Is Going To Make You Love Avocado!
How To Pick An Avocado
In order to make sure you have a yummy guacamole, you have to use an avocado that has ripened properly. My tips for picking the perfect avocado are as follows:
1. Buy a green avocado and let it sit on the counter for a few days until it feels slightly soft to the touch. Make sure you monitor the ripeness of the avocado so it doesn’t over ripen. It shouldn’t be so soft that you see your finger’s indentation on the skin.
2. Buy a darker avocado that still feels hard to the touch and let it sit on the counter for one more day. By then it should be ripe enough to use.
3. Buy a darker avocado that feels soft to the touch but not to the point of being very soft. This way you’d have a pretty good chance of getting a ripe avocado that should be still nice inside. I prefer the other 2 options above but if you’re absolutely pressed for time you might get lucky.
Health Benefits Of Avocados
Avocados can be a wonderful addition to your daily or weekly diet. They’re super nutritious and contain a number of very healthy fats. For example they’re rich in oleic acid, which can help you combat chronic inflammation. In a typical serving of avocado (100 gr) you can benefit from several B vitamins, vitamin K as well as vitamin C, E and potassium. Avocados also contain phytosterols, which are known to lower bad cholesterol.
In addition, eating avocados is good for your eye health as they contain lutein and zeaxanthin. These two nutrients can help in fighting macular degeneration, one of the leading causes of blindness in the US. If you want healthy skin and hair make sure you add avocados to your diet. One avocado fruit contains 20% of your daily dose of Vitamin E, which helps to fight the signs of aging. This all sounds great to me, doesn’t it? So make sure you stock up on avocados and start making some yummy guacamole. It can only benefit your health.
How To Make Yummy Guacamole
Ingredients
1-3 small or 2 large avocados
Juice of 1 lime squeezed out
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1 tsp of cayenne sauce (you could use Frank’s Red Hot or similar)
1/2 finely chopped seeded jalapeno pepper
1-2 finely chopped or minced peeled garlic
1 tbsp of fresh chopped cilantro (optional)
1 tsp of olive oil (optional)
Directions
Cut avocado and get the pit out. I use a fork instead of a spoon to fork out the flesh of the avocado. In a mixing bowl add the avocado and pour half of the lime juice over it. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Taste and adjust the intensity of any ingredients such as lime juice or cayenne sauce based on your personal preference. I love cilantro so for me this ingredient is a must in a yummy guacamole. But I understand that not everybody likes cilantro so I listed it as an optional ingredient.
If your avocados are of the drier variety feel free to add some olive oil to the mix. This is not necessary if your avocados are especially creamy but you can still add it for additional healthy fat content. Chill guacamole for at least 30 minutes and serve with chips, pita crisps or as a topping on tacos.
We absolutely love guacamole and we just can’t stop eating it. That’s why we actually started to make our own chips instead of buying the store varieties. Now we just buy a large bag of healthy pitas and make chips out of them. So I’ve decided to share with you our process for making pita chips.
How To Make Tasty Pita Chips
Ingredients
2-3 pitas
grapeseed oil or your favorite oil
spicy hot pepper oil
garlic powder
oregano
paprika
cumin (check out my article about the benefits of cumin)
cayenne pepper
Parmesan cheese
salt
Directions
Pre-heat toaster oven or regular oven if using. We run the toaster oven twice on max to pre-heat it. Place 1 pita in the toaster oven and toast on high until the pita rises. Take out the pita, put on a flat surface cutting board, cover with another untoasted pita and cut lengthwise in half. Place both halfs on top of each other and cut into chip like pieces.
Pour grapeseed and hot pepper oil on a plate. Dip pita chips in oil and transfer to a baking tray. Sprinkle chips with garlic powder. Then depending on the flavor combination sprinkle some chips with paprika and oregano. Sprinkle other ones with chipotle powder and oregano. Then sprinkle other ones with cumin, cayenne pepper and oregano.
Place in oven and bake for about 3-5 minutes depending on desired crispness and your oven’s settings. Take chips out and sprinkle with a little bit of sea salt and Parmesan cheese. Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy with your yummy guacamole.
Now you’re ready to really experience the true beauty of avocado. The spicy, crunchy, tangy guacamole really transforms this often-misunderstood fruit. The once bland and perhaps unappetizing thought of avocado now becomes something else. I really do hope you give this recipe a try.
