Sauble Beach – Fun Things To Do At This Hidden Gem In Ontario, Canada

Sauble Beach welcome sign

Are you looking for a great beach to visit in Ontario, Canada? Look no further than Sauble Beach. This fantastic beach town is truly the hidden gem in the province of Ontario. I’m almost reluctant to write about this place as I really want it to stay low key and keep its small town charm. Over the years, I have visited Sauble Beach on numerous occasions and I’d love to share all the fun things to do in this great little town.

Fun Things To Do In Sauble Beach

Sauble Beach Views

Ihave taken some of the most beautiful pictures from Sauble Beach. When I show my pictures, everybody always asks me what exotic destination I have travelled to. Then I surprise them by saying my pictures are from Sauble. The beach in this town is truly magnificent and can rival many international destinations such as Miami, Florida or Negril, Jamaica.

Did you know that Sauble Beach stretches for seven miles long (11 km)? That is just as long as the 7 mile beach in Negril, Jamaica. Sauble is known to be the second longest freshwater beach in the world only after Wasaga Beach, Ontario. Another unique feature of this beach is its sandbar deposits building out along the Lake Huron shoreline. Therefore this natural phenomenon keeps the water at Sauble very shallow and warm. I find the water here much warmer than any other beach in Ontario, Canada.

How To Get There

Sauble Beach is a small resort community in Bruce County located in south western Ontario. It is on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, on the north edge of the Saugeen Nation.

Address: Lakeshore Boulevard North, Sauble Beach, Ontario N0H 2G0, Canada, Phone Number: +1 519-422-1262. For more information on Sauble visit their official website.

Where To Stay

There are many places to stay in Sauble from hotels, motels, bed and breakfast, public and private cottages to camp sites. For a unique experience in this quiet town I would recommend renting a cottage. One of our favourite cottage rental places we have stayed at is Beachside Cottages. They offer a variety of options for your stay depending on the size of your party from one to five bedroom cottages. All of their cottages are located right across the street from the beautiful beach. You only need to walk a few steps beyond the sand dunes to enjoy the beauty of the waterfront.
Here are some of the amenities they offer:
  • Parking at the door
  • Private picnic area or deck with picnic table
  • Propane barbecue
  • Fire pit
  • Pots, pans, dishes cutlery are also included
  • Three or four piece bathrooms
  • Full kitchen facilities
  • All units have full size fridges, microwaves, coffee makers and toasters

Beachside Cottages is a really amazing place to stay and they welcome both couples and families. The owner is very accommodating so let him know if there’s anything you need. Tip: you can get firewood from him so it’s very convenient and usually cheaper than getting it at Value-Mart.

While you’re staying at your cottage you never know who might drop by to visit. One year we befriended a spunky little chipmunk we affectionately called Jumpy. He got the name because he was always quick on his feet and ready to jump around our backyard. He was super friendly and even ate right out of our hands. Nowadays, we always bring some nuts with us in case Jumpy comes around.

Where To Eat

You might not like what I’m about to say but the best place to eat in Sauble Beach is at your own cottage. The relaxed and chill vibe of cottage life will give you the desire to get out the bbq and make your own amazing culinary creations. Before we head out to Sauble we usually stock up on some of our favourite ingredients. If you’re not able to go shopping beforehand there is a local Value-Mart where you can get all the necessities and supplies for the cottage life.

Here’s some of the awesome creations we have made!

The cottage comes equipped with a full kitchen so you’ll also be able to cook anything you’d like on the stovetop or in the oven. We made some amazing breakfasts at the cottage.

Restaurants To Check Out

After all that cooking I understand if you need a break. So there are a variety of restaurants in the area you can check out. We found a few pretty decent places for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

DNL’s Restaurant

This is a family owned restaurant and they serve full breakfast, lunch and dinner with some daily and weekly specials. It is very conveniently located on the main strip. We opted for fish and chips. The dish was pretty standard fish and chips variety. It came with either fries or salad and tartar sauce. There wasn’t that much of the tartar sauce so we ended up asking for some more which after a bit of a wait we did receive. Overall it was a pretty good dish. The service while a bit slow was pretty typical of a small town.

Beach Burger

For a quick snack or a light dinner there’s always Beach Burger located just a few steps from the beach. There you can find a variety of different burger options, hot dogs and fries. This is a great little hangout. They have sitting inside or outside picnic tables to choose from. The burgers here are very good and it’s always a good option for a quick bite.

Sauble Dunes Bar & Grill

We went to this restaurant for breakfast and we weren’t disappointed. We opted for Two Eggs, Peameal & Toast. The portion sizes were good and the food was pretty decent. On a nice day you can sit on the patio they have in front of the restaurant. This way you get a nice view of the neighbourhood.

Things To Do

The Beach

The best thing to do in Sauble is to spend a lazy day at the beach. The beach is long enough that you will not feel cramped and will definitely find a spot all to yourself. There are no chairs or umbrella rentals so you need to bring your own supplies. If you’re staying at any of the nearby cottages you can make your own food and bring it to the beach. The water here is pretty calm and you can walk deep into it for quite some time. It is also much warmer than any other Ontario beach I’ve been to. So take a dip and enjoy an extra long swim.

Sitting By The Fire Pit

One of the oldest and fondest memories anyone can have is sitting by the fire pit and watching the flames flicker away. This is one of those things I always look forward to when going to Sauble. Get out your camp chairs, blankets, marshmallows, drinks and don’t forget the music. You can spend countless hours chatting away while watching the roaring fire. And to top it off when you look up you’ll get to see so many stars in the night sky. Living in the city, you almost forget how big and amazing the night sky really is.

I love sitting by the fire so much that even rain won’t keep me away. One rainy night we ended up huddled under the picnic table umbrella just so we didn’t have to miss out on being outdoors. Another night I went on a photo frenzy and captured the most incredible burning fire logs that almost came alive. There’s something magical about watching the fire burning away. It’s the simple things in life we sometimes forget to enjoy.

Shopping

You may not think of Sauble as a shopping destination but you’d be wrong. There’s a hidden gem in this little town and it’s called The Patch. This store has so many clothes you’ll find yourself browsing there of hours. It’s by far one of my favourite places to check out in Sauble. They have many designer and non designer clothes there and you’ll find a lot of different options. I once found a Tommy Hilfiger sweater there for only $5. This place gets clothes from all over and you never know what awesome item you’ll come across.

Events On The Main Strip

Every Tuesday evening, from June 21st to Sept 20th there’s a signature Cruise Night. The show runs from 6pm until sunset. You can see hundreds of vintage cars, hot rods and awesome bikes on the main street! There are also many prizes to be won. This is a free event and free parking is available everyday after 5pm.

Drive-In Theatre

Yes the drive-in theatre still exists! This one it’s isn’t located directly in Sauble but it’s about 20 min. drive away in Owen Sound. It opens sessionally from late spring to late summer so check their website to find out when they open. It’s the perfect place to go to on that boring and rainy day when there isn’t much to do on your beach vacation.

Earthbound Touring Gardens

These are seasonal gardens that are open from May through to Thanksgiving. They’re located in Red Bay, South Bruce Peninsula which is only 17 min. drive away from Sauble Beach. I have always wanted to visit these gardens because they have a designated butterfly garden. I love butterflies so this is on my list of things I still want to do next time I’m in Sauble.

I hope you venture out to Sauble Beach. It’s truly a wonderful and fun place to visit. It hasn’t lost its small town charm and staying here will really relax you. It’s a great place to visit for a couple who’s looking for that romantic stroll on a beautiful beach. I always enjoy coming here with my boyfriend to unwind and spend some quality time together.
