Check out some great ideas for easy Halloween costumes

I’m going to give you a little fun fact about me; I love Halloween!!! It’s been my favorite ‘holiday’ since I came to Canada. Unfortunately, I missed out on all the childhood fun around this holiday because I grew up in Europe. We didn’t celebrate Halloween then. So I never got to dress up and go trick-or-treating. Imagine my delight when I came to Canada and discovered this wicked ritual. I was immediately in love. Coming up with the perfect Halloween costume ideas is definitely my favorite part of Halloween.

After all, you get to be whomever you want on that day. You get to live out your fantasies and share them with everybody. And you don’t have to worry that you’d be the odd man out. The beauty of Halloween is that everyone is in on the fun. I absolutely adore that. And all the scary movies and the candy ain’t too shabby either.

Over the years I got to experience Halloween as a teenager and then an adult. I finally got to dress up and go out to a few parties, go trick-or-treating with my nephew and eat all the Reeses Pieces I desired. What a fun time that has been. So I wanted to share with you some of my best Halloween costume ideas that are both fun and easy to get even at the last minute. And if you want to learn some more fun facts about me check out my Blue Sky Blogging Challenge post.

Halloween Costume Ideas – French Maid

We all have that naughty side so why not play it up on Halloween. This costume can be a fun one to try. You can go out and buy full on French Maid costume or you can create something yourself. Try pairing up a body suit with an apron and a back mini shirt. Then all you need is a couple of extra accessories. Those would be: sexy stockings, hi-heel pumps, a feather duster and a garter. Voila, now you are a French Maid personified. Just be aware that this costume is pretty popular so you might run into other French Maids out there. As you see below one year two of my friend’s ended up in French Maid costumes so there were three of us. But we all put our own flair into the costumes so we still looked different. Fun times!!!

Halloween Costume Ideas – Sexy Cop

Why this costume you may ask? Because I grew up watching Police Academy and I was quite obsessed with it at the time. They made the academy look like so much fun. And I have to admit I had a huge crush on Steve Guttenberg’s Mahoney character!!! So naturally I wanted to be Kim Catrall’s character that got to be Mahoney’s love interest. One year I decided that it was time to try out the sexy cop outfit myself.

If you have a hard time finding just the right uniform for you I have some tips. You can pair up the uniform top with some black shorts. This top was actually a bodysuit that came with all the needed accessories like the cop hat, handcuffs and the baton. Then you just need to get a cheap pair of aviator glasses and fishnet stockings. If you already have some sexy knee-hi boots like I did, you’re in luck. That’s pretty much all you need to perfect this look. Oh and make sure you bring out some attitude when you wear this. After all you are the authority now!!!

Halloween Costume Ideas – Burlesque Dancer

I have to admit I’ve always been a bit of a dancer. And I used to go out to dance clubs all the time. Burlesque dancing is another form of artful expression. It can be very glamorous and quite seductive. You can easily create a beautiful Burlesque dancer outfit with only a few items. For this look I suggest getting a nice bustier top, a fluffy skirt, fishnet stockings, long satin gloves and your favorite pumps. To finish off your look you will need a gorgeous feather boa that is synonymous with Burlesque dancing. I also opted for a fun mask to add further mystery to this look. Feel free to add other playful accessories like a funky hat and make sure you add some glitter to your make-up. Now you’re shining Burlesque star!!!

Halloween Costume Ideas – Marilyn Monroe

Who doesn’t want to be a blonde bombshell for a night? And what a better beauty than Marilyn Monroe herself. I’ve always been a fan of Marilyn. She was a beautiful and fascinating lady. And she always looked so put together and glamorous. There are several of her outfits I absolutely adore. One of them being her famous white dress. You can easily re-create this look. All you need is a white halter-top dress that has some flow to it. Then you will need a blonde Marilyn-like wig and some fake pear clip-on earrings. Now strike a pose and wait for all the flashbulbs to go off. You’re ready for your close-up!

Halloween Costume Ideas – Mental Patient

You might think this costume idea is a bit of a stretch. Get it? Stretch? As in stretcher? Like for a mental patient. Ha ha ha. This one is pretty easy to pull off. All you need is a bit of crazy. So go for it. Joking aside, the key piece of this outfit is the straight jacket. Now this one can be a bit tricky. I was able to find this modern straight jacket online at a costume shop. You can also look for it on eBay. But if you can’t find one you can also stick on some black masking tape to make it appear as if you’re going to be strapped in.

To perfect the look of a mental patient aside from giving people the death stare you need some bandages. Wrap your head in a bandage so it looks like you’re a danger to yourself and possibly others. Feel free to add some fake blood if you like or hold the bandage together with a safety pin like I did. For this look I had to keep it tame because I wore this to work. Who said your co-workers can’t drive you mad right? Some of them can send you straight to the loony bin and then even a Ghostbuster can’t help you. LOL!

Halloween Costume Ideas – Princess

This one is perfect for those out there who are parents. Almost every little girl dreams of being a princess one time or another. Why not dress up with your little one as a princess. You can easily accompany your child to go treat-or-treating and be princess twinsies. I bet your little one will love this idea. To best accomplish this look you should get a very glamorous or ballroom like dress, some sparkly slippers and a princess tiara. You can opt to get a wig for that extra hair volume. I found a great wig a local costume shop but you can also find them online at costume shops or eBay.

Halloween Costume Ideas – Flamenco Dancer

Okay so this is another dance related costume. Clearly I can’t let go of my dancer dreams. But you can have so much fun with this one. If you can’t find a Flamenco dancer dress there are ways you can still pull off this look. You will need a layered ruffle skirt and a Spanish inspired ruffle top. Then you can finish off the look with a pretty and chunky necklace and a nice flower to put in your hair. Make sure you also wear your dance shoes as you will feel like hitting the dance floor in this outfit. For this look I also rented a dark hair wig to get myself into that Flamenco dancer character.

It’s too bad you can’t celebrate Halloween Mini. But at least you can live vicariously through others via social media. Thank you.

These are a lot of good ideas. I personally dread dress-up parties, but I was working on Halloween night and we had an event on for kids, so I felt like I needed to. Luckily, my boyfriend had a spare wizard robe, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have bothered!

    1. thesavvydreamer says:

Oh I get that. Dressing up is not for everyone. I love it because we never did it back home. But I did dress up as a child in kindergarten for various occasions and I always enjoyed that.

  8. Mary says:

I LOVE halloween but know I often don’t have time to think of costumes too much ahead of time. These are all really great and quick ideas that can be done on a budget as well! So far, I’ve only ever tried the Princess option but maybe next year I’ll be grabbing one of these in a pinch. πŸ™‚
